CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KRCU) - Limestone quarries present potentially hazardous health effects, according to Dr. John Kraemer, director of the Center for Environmental Analysis at Southeast MO State University.
Dust from these quarries is the main culprit for negative health effects. Dust can come in many different particulate sizes, each with its own health effects.
Dr. Kraemer says that the particulate size plays a big role in the effects that dust from these quarries has on human health.
"The smaller the particle size, the (greater the) ability for it to go deeper into the lung, which can then exacerbate already-existing health defects like asthma," Kraemer says.
The proposed Fruitland quarries would be located near Saxony Lutheran School. Parents and teachers have voiced their concern that the quarries would aggravate asthma among students.
